Looking for some unique Christmas gifts?
Mis Petates is a store that sells unusual and unique items, including great little gag gifts. There is always something you can find here for that person that is hard to buy for, or just for yourself. I would recommend you have a look at one of their three stores in Montevideo.

Are you looking for fabulous Uruguayan wool clothing/homewares?
I was at a fair today where I saw the lovely products that Don Baez makes. I then visited their store and was even more impressed by the quality and styles of their clothing and homewares. Don Baez is a Uruguayan brand and all products are 100% undyed merino wool. I recommend you check out their store!

Looking for some great Uruguayan made Christmas gifts?
This store is my go-to for excellent Uruguayan made products at great prices. It is tucked away in a house in Carrasco Norte and totally worth checking out. There isn't much they don't sell and they are very friendly and helpful. Note: the store is not sign posted from the street so can be hard to spot (just ring the gate bell when you get there).

I regularly send my shoes to the shoe repair store on Arocena (within the small set of shops between BBVA bank and Cambio Sur).
The shoe repair shop on Arcoena has never failed to fix any problem I have presented them with, the service is excellent. I had previously tried the shoe repair store on the outside of Portones Mall but found their prices to be more expensive and when they said they couldn't repair a pair of boots for me but the store on Arcoena was able to...I knew I had found a better store!
I would highly recommend taking your shoes (and suitcases) to this store for all your repair needs.

Are you looking for handmade leather bags in Montevideo?
For those that know me, they know I love to shop! In Uruguay I find the fashion a bit hit-and-miss..wait a minute...re-phrase that, I find it entirely hit-and-miss. So while in complete withdrawal from the lack of shopping I do in this country, I do occasionally manage to find a gem hidden in the rough.
Trendy Cueros is a leather bag supplier that sells beautiful handmade leather purses and bags, all made by herself in her apartment in downtown Montevideo. Trendy Cueros doesn't have a store but you can find their products on their Facebook page or when they are selling at any of the Design Fairs happening in and around Montevideo (see Feria Maxima De Diseño on Facebook).
Not only do I find Trendy Cueros leather products to be priced well, they are also stylish and well made. Not to mention, I love to support small businesses - who wants to buy a leather bag that has been mass produced in China when you could have a one-off handmade bag from Uruguay?...not me!
Check out Trendy Cueros and happy shopping :)

I have found an excellent haberdashery (merceria) called Merceria el Tigre. This merceria has the best selection I have ever found in an Uruguayan merceria - I even managed to find items that I thought were not possible to find in Uruguay. I would recommend a visit to this merceria.

Looking for a sewing machine shop/repair service?
I was highly impressed with the service at Masian when I took my overlocker in for repairs. Not only were the staff super knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, they also went the extra mile getting their daughter to phone my cell and speak to me in English. My overlocker is working perfectly and the repairs are guaranteed for 3 months. Alongside repairs, this store also sells a variety of sewing machines, overlockers, fabric cutters and other accessories. I was never keen to buy a Chinese made sewing machine from a Uruguayan supermarket or appliance store so was pleased to see Masian selling Brother, Singer and other reputable brands right here in Uruguay! This store is definitely worth a visit.

Looking for a place to buy delicious meat?
Gourmeat Boutique Carnes is the place to go to buy delicious meat. If you have been to the new Say Cheese Deli Market in Carrasco you may have noticed that Gourmeat is next door, or maybe you have been to the Gourmeat in Punta Cararetas. Either way, I am sure you would agree that their meat is a cut above the rest (pun intended). They are very helpful in answering questions (in English too!) and although the prices are higher than the supermarket the taste and quality is well worth it.

Where can you buy beans for a bean bag in Montevideo?
It seemed to me that all 'bean' bags in Uruguay were actually filled with foam chips so I went on a mission to find actual beans to fill my bags. After much searching I managed to find bags of beans at a shop called Paganini Rossi, address: Colonia 2223 (not too far from Tres Cruces Mall area). 350pesos for a large bag (1kg worth). However, I made the bean bags myself because to find those is much harder - unless you like plastic/vinyl covered bags which seem to be able to be bought in Uruguay (but are not very comfortable to sit on). It took me two 1kg bags of beans to fill each of my bean bags.

Where can you buy fabrics/sewing accessories in Montevideo?
Fabric Stores:
- There are a number of fabric stores downtown in the area of Andes from 18 de Julio towards the Rambla.
- The Indian Outlet in La Commercial area (commonly known as Barrio Judio) has a huge variety of fabrics at the back (you can find it at Arenal Grande and Amezaga area)
- Las Telas in Solymar. Go down Giannatasio, pass Multiahorro on your right and you will find it on your right. It's on the fifth street after Calle Uruguay (where Multiahorro is) - give or take one block. It is a corner with about 3 or 4 shops. It is a small shop but has good prices.
Haberdashery Stores:
Habahashery shops (for sewing accessories) are called mercerias and can be found at:
- The corner of Cooper/Arocena – small store.
- Botones & Moños Merceria y Accesorios on the ground floor of Punta Carretas Mall – has the best variety of goods.
- ‘Annettes’ shop next to the crepe restaurant on Arocena (last block before the casino) – good wool selection.

Where can you buy KitchenAid products in Montevideo?
I purchased my KitchenAid mixer from Nelson Sobrero in Carrasco and it was cheaper than if I were to buy it where I am from (New Zealand)! although it may not be cheaper than in other countries, I got a great deal with Itau...15% off and it could be paid for in 10 payments. This sort of deal is offered at Nelson Sobrero at various times throughout the year. Plus a benefit of buying within Uruguay, and not importing one, is that I got a warranty from the store :)
Also, keep an eye on the website for other deals that Nelson Sobrero offer - at the moment they have 25% off all Panasonic products when you pay with Itau (and you can make up to 12 payments).

Where is a great bakery in Montevideo?
I visited many bakeries in Montevideo before someone told me about Del Museo. Once I visited Del Museo I never went to another bakery again. Del Museo offers delicious breads and pastries - it is worth checking out! The multi-grain breads, bread rolls, croissants, bizcochos, apple strudel and donuts are favourites of my family.
I recommend a visit to Del Museo:

Tue-Sun 7.30am-8pm
Av. Marques Castro & Av. Giannattasio Km24,300: Solymar (Ciudad de la Costa)

Where can you get baking equipment and decorations in Montevideo?
Although you can pick up baking ingredients and some sprinkles/candles at supermarkets in Uruguay the best shop to go to get all your baking needs is Zanetti. Not only can you find imported products (like the Wilton brand) but you can also buy bulk ingredients for cheaper than in the supermarket. It is worth a trip down there to see what they have. This is my go to store for Birthday party baking and cake decorating supplies!

Where can you buy bulk goods for cheap?
I visited the Mayorista store today to buy candy/sweets for some upcoming Birthday parties. The store is a very basic warehouse style store of bulk buy goods. The pictured lollipops were only $38 pesos for a bag of 50! the pictured hard sweets were $145 pesos for a bag of 135. I was pretty happy with the prices. Worth checking out if you like buying in bulk :)

How good is the new Sodimac Homecenter store in Montevideo?
I went to check out the new Sodimac Homecenter store on Giannattasio. Sodimac is a Chilian company and this is their first store in Uruguay. A homecenter is not a foreign concept for me, in New Zealand we have stores like Mitre 10 and Bunnings Warehouse which are similar to Home Depot stores in the USA. The convenience of having everything in the one store is certainly a plus - in Sodimac there is; a garden centre, construction, lighting, plumbing, paints, tiles, furniture, home decor, hardware/tools, kitchenware...you name it they have it. The quality at Sodimac is about the same as any other hardware store that I have been to in MVD. I found a lot of the prices to be the same if not a little bit cheaper at Sodimac but still expensive for the level of quality. I made a purchase and would go back, mainly for the convenience (I do get frustrated having to go to a hardware store for something, then to a garden centre for something else, then to another store for something else, etc etc), at least at Sodimac I can get it all in one place.
