Where can you buy imported cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese?

A while back we were, for the first time, able to buy imported cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese in Uruguay!  however, it is only available while stocks last.  Geant, Disco and Devoto are the stores where I have been able to find this cheese:

What is the difference between baking soda and baking powder? and where can you buy baking soda?

I was recently asked the above question by a friend in Uruguay, so here is the answer:

Both bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and baking powder are leavening agents. When included in a batter, the leavening agent creates air bubbles that expand when cooked, and cause it to rise.

Bicarbonate of soda needs to be mixed with moisture and an acidic ingredient for the necessary chemical reaction to make it rise, such as lemon juice, chocolate, buttermilk or honey.  Baking powder often comes pre-mixed with the acidic ingredient for you – so all you need to do is add the moisture.

In Uruguay baking powder is readily available at any supermarket and it is normally the Royal brand.

Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) however, can not be bought at the supermarket - it is bought over the counter at any pharmacy.  It also comes in very small bags and for those of us that bake a lot it pays to buy multiple bags at a time.  Also, if you like to clean with baking soda check this site out:  http://www.thenewhomemaker.com/cleanorg/soda.html

Where can you get a great homemade-style burger in Montevideo?

Other than all of the Uruguayan style bars/restaurants that sell chivotos and hamburgers that seem pretty similar to chivitos I was unable to find a great burger in Montevideo until I found Burlesque Bar.  They do burgers including salmon, chicken, pork, beef and more.  They are homemade and taste delicious, the chips are great too!  I have been here a number of times and will surely be going back.  I have also taken my kids there (they open at 7pm) and it is great for kids if you are there early when it is not too full.

Where can you get great Chinese food in Montevideo?

I would like to recommend a new Japanese/Chinese fusion restaurant in Montevideo called Fusimi. It is a buffet style (500 pesos per adult) with all kinds of Japanese sushi and a large selection of Chinese food. Delicious! I will be going back for sure. It is open for lunch and dinner (and on weekends too!).
