Looking for a restaurant recommendation in the Punta Gorda area?

The other day we returned to one of our favourite restaurants in Montevideo - Homero Bar in Punta Gorda.  Other than the usual Uruguayan cuisine of milanesas, chivitos, BBQ, pizzas and pasta, Homero Bar also have a great selection of seafood, huge delicious calzones! and much much more.  The coffee is ok and they make yummy juice smoothies too.  It is also important to note that the meals are very large portions.  Homero Bar offers good service and a kid friendly environment with outdoor and indoor seating.  It is a shame that they have removed the kids playground that used to be outside.

Would you like water delivered to your house?

I have spent the last couple years watching the Sirte water delivery truck deliver water around my street and I finally got some!  19pesos per bottle of water with or without gas in a crate of 12 and you can mix the quantity of gas/non gas within your crate of 12.  The bottles in the crates are 950ml each.  The bottles are glass so recyclable which is great!  They also sell 5L bottles (non recyclable) and barrels of water for water dispensers.  The delivery man will carry the water into your home and the convenience of buying it at home is awesome.

Check out all the Sirte products here.

Are you looking for some North American cuisine in Montevideo?

I tried Le Maple Leaf Bistrot the other day and would highly recommend it.  It is a new restaurant, only been open about 6 months.  A very small restaurant but a super friendly place to visit.  From the menu we had the hamburger, onion rings, all day breakfast and the poutine.  All the food was delicious, service was great and we all enjoyed our lunch.  I should note that we went for lunch because they don't open for dinner until 9pm (a bit late for us expats!).  Le Maple Leaf Bistrot is somewhere I will return to and I look forward to seeing the planned expansion of the outdoor seating area and other further updates that the owner told us about.  Please note that this is a cash only restaurant so come prepared (meals are around $250 each).

How can you save money and make delicious tomato relish in Uruguay?

With 'damaged' tomatoes costing only 25pesos a kilo at the local Sunday feira (on corner of Jamaica and Alberdi) I was inspired to make some tomato relish!

It is super easy, cheap, tastes great and seeing as you can't buy truly homemade relish in Uruguay it is an awesome treat.

My favourite recipe is from my trusty Edmonds Cookery Book (part of New Zealand Heritage since 1879!):

1.5kg tomatoes, blanched, skinned and quartered
4 onions, quartered
2 tablespoons salt
2 cups brown sugar
2 1/4 cups malt vinegar (or apple vinegar, which is what I use)
3 chillies
1 tablespoon dry mustard
1 tablespoon curry powder
2 tablespoons plain flour
1/4 cup malt vinegar (or apple vinegar, which is what I use)

Put tomatoes and onions into a non-metallic bowl.  Sprinkle with salt and leave for 12 hours.  Drain off liquid formed.  Put vegetables, sugar, first measure o vinegar and chillies into a pan. Boil gently for 1 1/2 hours, stirring frequently.  Mix mustard, curry, flour and second measure of vinegar to a smooth paste.  Stir into relish.  Boil for 5 minutes.  Pack into sterilised jars.  Makes about 4 x 350ml jars.

Have you tried the Say Cheese Deli Market in Carrasco?

We live just two blocks from Say Cheese Deli Market, a delicatessen and cafe. They sell a range of cheeses, meats, imported goods, wine and beer (including local craft beers).  For lunch or a light dinner they sell a selection of cheese/meat platters, pizzas and sandwiches - the food is delicious and well priced.  It is a lovely outdoor setting in the summer and you can grab some extra goodies to take home with you too.  A must-try new hot-spot for Carrasco!

Looking for something new for a lunch or an early dinner in Carrasco?

Try Camelia...Some of you may have already eaten at Camelia in the Old City or Punta Carretas but for those us here in Carrasco it is a new restaurant.  In the old Itau Bank building just off Arocena, Camelia offers snacks, lunches, dinner, takeaways and indoor/outdoor seating - it is known as a 'health food restaurant'.  Although the concept of 'eco-friendly' is not done well, with every item individually pre-packaged and multiple containers/cutlery issued, the location and setting are nice and relaxed.  The prices are reasonable and comparable with other cafes in this area ($550 pesos for lunch for two which included 2 quiches/tarts, 2 deserts and 2 juices).  The coffee is not good at all, so steer clear of that and grab a yummy juice instead!  I enjoy the vegetable quiches/tarts and the deserts are nice too.  I have returned here and will be doing so again.  Worth a try if you are looking for something a bit different in Montevideo.
