SAVINGS

I love to save money where I can.  In Uruguay that can be hard because of the cost of living but on this page I will share my tips on saving money.  Also you can like the Saving in Uruguay facebook page!

Have you seen the new coupons at Devoto/Geant/Disco?

The Devoto/Disco/Geant supermarket chain has started issuing coupons every time you shop.  Over the past two weeks I have used my coupons to get $150 off every $1,500 spent.  Not to mention that I still get my usual 5% discount just by shopping on Tuesdays and having a points card.  Today's savings..almost $700!  Now that is nothing to sniff at!

If you are an Antel user you may have noticed a note on your paper bills that says that from the 1st September each paper bill sent to you will cost $29.  Antel is encouraging users to sign up to receive bills via email.  Sounds like a great idea to me, in my case this will save me $87 pesos per month not to mention the ecological goodwill.

Antel encourages the use of their website or phone services to change account details and receive all bills via email.  However, it turns out that for non-Spanish speakers you can't phone *123 to make the change to your account and if your Antel accounts were registered using your passport number (and not a UY cedula) you also can't change your account details via the Antel website, because it doesn't accept passport numbers.  I hope you are all able to change your account details via the phone or the web, because if you can't you will need to visit an Antel office :( and that is another entirely different blog post!

Good luck Antel users!

How can I heat my house efficiently and cost effectively?

I am happy to recommend the Econo-Heat heaters/fires that can be purchased here in Uruguay.  The below pictured heater wall panels (a technology from South Africa) are imported here to Uruguay and run at the cost of leaving 4 x 100watt light bulbs running!  I have one in my kids bedroom and I leave it running all night to keep the room warm.    The Eco Sol company also sells the wall panel heaters (but I have not used their products before).

Another heating solution from the 'econo-heat' group of heaters to save on your electricity bill is this heater that heats up to 60m2:

It is an electric energy efficient heater that I use in our living area and other rooms (you can just unplug it and wheel it around to different rooms).

Although the outlay cost of these heaters may seem expensive, since buying these and switching my UTE electricity meter to the split tariff, I have halved my electricity bill in winter!

How can you save money on your electricity bill in Uruguay?

We all know how expensive electricity is in Uruguay but did you know...you can go to any UTE office and change your electricity meter to a split tarrif which means you pay around 2.375 per kWh during off peak (i.e during the day) and 6.244 per kWh during peak hours (5-11pm in winter and 6-12pm in summer).  This can save you money if you are home during the day and/or use most of your power then.  Also you can set timers on hot water tanks, washing machines, dishwashers to operate after the peak ends at 11pm or midnight.  The normal rates for electricity (not on split tarrif) are: 3.476 for 1-100kWh, 4.700 for 101-600kWh and 5.390 for
601kWh onwards. So it doesn't take long before you are paying 5.390 for a lot of your power whereas on split tarrif you would only be paying 2.375 for most hours and overall may end up paying a lot less.

How long does the IVA discount apply for use with foreign cards?

Some of you will know that if you pay for services such as hotels, car rentals, restaurants etc with an international issued credit/debit card you will be exempted from paying IVA (22 % tax) in Uruguay.   Well, this law/rule has been extended until 31 July 2015 and may be extended even further.
