Have you been to Pueblo Chico?

I have visited Pueblo Chico twice and have enjoyed it so much that I thought I would tell you all about it.   Pueblo Chico offers a day experience - you can go for lunch in the restaurant which includes use of the swimming pool and the large grounds/playground - or you can go for an overnight experience and stay in one of their great cabins.  The food in the restaurant is typical Uruguayan cuisine with a slight twist, due to the owners Greek heritage.  The restaurant prices are on the slightly higher side but seeing as it includes the use of the swimming pool and vast grounds I find it acceptable.  Overall I think this is a lovely place to go (especially for a family with young children).

Have you been to Brawn Bar?

Brawn Bar is a relatively new bar that serves over 60 different craft beers as well as a small selection of food.  Super friendly owner/operator and the wait staff were good.  The menu for dinner is a couple of pizzas, a couple of burgers, homemade fries and 2-3 other items.  Though not an extensive menu, what they do have is homemade and yummy.  A particularly hot spot if you like craft beers!

Have you been to the newest Cafe/Bakery in Carrasco?

Some of you may know La Linda Bakery from Punta Del Este, well they have now opened one up in Carrasco!  I have visited La Linda for coffee/snack in the mid-morning and also for lunch and I would highly recommend you check it out.  The setting inside a renovated old house is just beautiful, including sitting outside in the garden.  The food is yummy and the service is excellent (including wait staff that speak English).  Although the coffee could do with a little improvement (note: I may be a coffee snob), I will definitely be returning to La Linda.  Stay tuned to Ask Annette for more great recommendations :)

Are you looking for a fab restaurant?

Friends took me to Gourmet Marti the other night and I have to say...what a gem of a restaurant to find!  Gourmet Marti offers a fine-dining experience with unique cuisine.  The food is quite different to the usual Uruguay cuisine, so this was a really nice change.  The service was excellent and the setting is very quaint (the restaurant is set in the front garden and green house of the owners home).  I would recommend booking for dinner as it is a very small restaurant with limited seating.  I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and would recommend you try Gourmet Marti.

Have you been to Fellini in Carrasco?

I recently had dinner at the Italian restaurant 'Fellini' in Carrasco and it was great.   The menu is full of pizzas, pastas, risottos and more.  The thin crust wood fired pizza was great as was the risotto.  The decor in the restaurant is fabulous and makes for a great dining experience.  The service was excellent, which is always a treat in Uruguay.  I look forward to returning to Fellini to try something else on the menu as well as making it to the dessert menu!

Looking for some delicious Swiss food in Uruguay?

I visited the restaurant at the Granja Hotel Suizo in Nueva Helvecia and was very impressed.  The grounds of the hotel are expansive and excellent for children to run around and enjoy.  The restaurant has great thematic decor and the menu is quite wide.  We enjoyed eating cheese fondue, pate, Swiss sausage, smoked pork chop, rosti and apple strudel.  We stayed and relaxed at the restaurant for a long time and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.  I would recommend a visit to this restaurant.  As an added note we took a look at one of the hotel rooms and were very unimpressed, the hotel rooms are very old and need a major upgrade.  So although I would drive out to Nueva Helvecia to visit the Granja Hotel Suizo restaurant, I would not stay at the hotel.

Looking for a fabulous restaurant in Rosario?

While staying at the Mon Petit Hotel the other weekend we ventured into Rosario for dinner.  We tried a new restaurant called Restaurante El Mati and were hugely impressed.  The menu was quite different to other places we have been to in Uruguay and the food was delicious!  The food was so flavoursome, cooked to perfection and it was so lovely to eat food that didn't include Uruguayan staples like milanesa/pasta/pizza/BBQ...

The service was excellent, the setting was nice and we had a great time.  I can't wait to go back to this restaurant - even if it is out of Montevideo.  Restaurante El Mati has made it into the Ask Annette top 5 restaurants in Uruguay!  You must try it...

Are you looking for Korean food in Montevideo?

I can highly recommend a visit to Mygeong Ga Restaurant.  The decor and atmosphere is super casual, the service is good and the food is delicious. Dishes range from $300-$600 and they are huge (definitely for sharing). I thoroughly enjoyed the meal and will be returning to this restaurant for sure.

Have you been to Tandory Restaurant?

We finally tried the much talked about Tandory Restaurant in Montevideo and we were very impressed.  The service was excellent, including the bilingual menu on a tablet with photos/detailed descriptions, and the personal assistance with our selections.  Between the four of us we tried the duck, lamb, fish, pasta and it was all very flavorsome and delicious.   For desert, I can recommend the dulce de leite volcano - yum!  Also, good coffee (including decaf!).  We got 25% off our bill with Itau and the total bill for four of us was $4600 (including all drinks).  We thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening and would go back on another special occasion.  Remember to book...it is a popular spot.

If you are looking for a nice cafeteria style restaurant then I can recommend Hoy Te Quiero in Pocitos.  Wide range of sandwiches, tarts/quiches, deserts/bakery goods, brunch options and a couple of other salads/pastas on the menu.  They also offer gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options.  Indoor and outdoor seating, good service and ok prices.  Give it a try next time you are in Pocitos!

What is the latest restaurant review by Ask Annette?

I finally got around to eating at Cafe Misterio in Carrasco.  I thoroughly enjoyed my meal there, though the service is slow (the restaurant was full on a Friday lunchtime with what appeared to be only 3 waitresses working).   The prices are reasonably high (see menu below) but seeing as the food is excellent quality and flavour I had no problem paying the bill.  The menu is quite varied, making Cafe Misterio worth another visit to try something else.  Tip: if you come when they open at 12 then you will get a table without reservation, anytime later and you will most likely need a reservation.  I would also recommend making a reservation for evening dining.  You can make reservations for Monday-Friday dining online via their website but for groups of 10 or more and Saturday dining you will need to phone the restaurant.  Also children under 12 are not allowed!

Looking for a new brunch/lunch spot?

I love brunch and am always on the hunt for a new brunch spot in Montevideo!   I tried the brunch at Sucré Salé Café & Bistró on the weekend. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the food; the poached eggs/homemade hashbrown/cherry tomato meal was yummy.  The toast was too dry though so avoid that part of the meal.  The pancake meal was also very yum with 3 large fluffy pancakes.  The juice is real but needs a lot of sugar.  Coffee could definitely do with some work so be aware when ordering coffee.  Service was friendly but the food does take a while to cook.  There is a small garden at the back of the cafe that is nice for kids to run around in.  I thought the cafe prices were very reasonable and I would be happy to give Sucré Salé another try.  A tip: don't use the link to the google map directions via the Sucré Salé Café Facebook page, it takes you to the completely wrong area on the street!

I tried the most delicious Brazilian style pizza at a friends Birthday party and was keen to try it again.  The restaurant is called Pizzeria Pizzaiolo and the 2nd time around I was not disappointed! With flavours that vary from the basic Uruguayan-style pizzas, Pizzeria Pizzaiolo is a must try!   They don't provide the usual massive amounts of fake mozzarella and thick doughy bases, instead they have delicious sauces, flavours and toppings.  I love the BBQ chicken pizza and the buffalo wings are great too - they even make Hawaiian pizza! (ever seen that in Uruguay?!).  The pizzas are huge (40cm) and big enough for our family of 4.  You can order for delivery online at PedidosYa or dine in at their restaurant in Punta Gorda.  You must give Pizzeria Pizzaiolo a shot!

Coffee Shop is a small cafe open for brunch/lunch.  It identifies on Facebook as; Coffee Bar, Lunch, American baked specialties, Smoothies, etc.  I visited the Coffee Shop yesterday and really enjoyed my lunch.  I had a chicken cesar wrap, a coffee and a cinnamon bun.  My friends also enjoyed their bagel, sandwich, brownie and apple croissant.  Coffee Shop is a casual atmosphere and very friendly.  You order at the counter so service is pretty much the person at the counter and then someone who brings you the food.  The service at the counter was very friendly and it was nice to order lunch in English for a change.  I found the prices to be reasonable.  Note:  it is cash only!  Coffee Shop is not an ideal location for me (as I live in Carrasco) and I found parking a pain but I would go back just because they offer a variety of food that can not be found in Uruguay!  This cafe is definitely worth a try if you are looking for something a bit different :)

Also, we asked about ordering plain bagels to go and this can be done if you phone ahead and a place an order so the Coffee Shop can order extra bagels. Yum yum bagels!

I have been to this restaurant twice and thoroughly enjoyed the food.  The menu has a wide selection of Mediterranean food, the service is good, prices are reasonable and the setting is very nice.  In particular I found the homemade breads were delicious as were the shish kebab meats, lehmeyun, tabuleh and hummus.   I will be heading back for sure, there is much more to be tried on their menu!  This is a must-try restaurant, especially if you are craving something a little different than the regular Uruguayan cuisine.

I experienced some very tasty German food at Dackel in Carrasco last night.  I was very impressed with the service from the waiter, he was attentive, happy (even smiled!) and helpful.  All these qualities in a waiter in Uruguay can be very hard to find.  We ordered the 'Chucrat Genie' for $730 which was a meal for two people - it was delicious!  It included 2 large smoked pork chops, bacon, 2 German sausages, 2 boiled potatoes, and sauerkraut (as pictured below).  We got a plate of papa suiza too (it is like a giant homemade hashbrown).  After spending our last spring holiday in the German area of General Villa Belgrano in Argentina and eating German food every night we were keen to see if Uruguay could produce the same quality of food.  I can confirm that yes they can! we enjoyed our meal just as much as the German food we experienced in Argentina.  I would recommend a visit to Dackel :)  Unfortunately I was too full for desert but I would like to return to Dackel to try the apple strudel.

Have you been to Lavender Tea Room?

I have been to Lavender Tea Room a few times and thought it was about time to blog about it.  Lavender is a nice little cafe in a lovely setting inside a garden Centre in Carrasco.  The salads, sandwiches and tarts are all delicious.  I have a mixed opinion about the deserts, the cheesecake on one hand is absolutely delicious and a must-try, but some of the cakes are hit-and-miss (they look fabulous but some look much better than they taste).  You can buy refreshing lemonade with mint by the litre and they serve various types of tea.  I would not recommend the coffee at all.  Also, it is important to note that children under 12 are not allowed at this cafe.  At busy times (i.e. Saturdays and holidays) it is important to book at Lavender Tea Room.  Enjoy!

Looking for a place to buy delicious meat?

Gourmeat Boutique Carnes is the place to go to buy delicious meat.  If you have been to the new Say Cheese Deli Market in Carrasco you may have noticed that Gourmeat is next door, or maybe you have been to  the Gourmeat in Punta Cararetas.  Either way, I am sure you would agree that their meat is a cut above the rest (pun intended).  They are very helpful in answering questions (in English too!) and although the prices are higher than the supermarket the taste and quality is well worth it.

Looking for a restaurant recommendation in Punta Gorda?

The other day we returned to one of our favourite restaurants in Montevideo - Homero Bar in Punta Gorda.  Other than the usual Uruguayan cuisine of milanesas, chivitos, BBQ, pizzas and pasta, Homero Bar also have a great selection of seafood, huge delicious calzones! and much much more.  The coffee is ok and they make yummy juice smoothies too.  It is also important to note that the meals are very large portions.  Homero Bar offers good service and a kid friendly environment with outdoor and indoor seating.  It is a shame that they have removed the kids playground that used to be outside.

Are you looking for some North American cuisine in Montevideo?

I tried Le Maple Leaf Bistrot the other day and would highly recommend it.  It is a new restaurant, only been open about 6 months.  A very small restaurant but a super friendly place to visit.  From the menu we had the hamburger, onion rings, all day breakfast and the poutine.  All the food was delicious, service was great and we all enjoyed our lunch.  I should note that we went for lunch because they don't open for dinner until 9pm (a bit late for us expats!).  Le Maple Leaf Bistrot is somewhere I will return to and I look forward to seeing the planned expansion of the outdoor seating area and other further updates that the owner told us about.  Please note that this is a cash only restaurant so come prepared (meals are around $250 each).

Looking for something new for a lunch or an early dinner in Carrasco?

Try Camelia...Some of you may have already eaten at Camelia in the Old City or Punta Carretas but for those us here
in Carrasco it is a new restaurant. In the old Itau Bank building just off Arocena, Camelia offers snacks, lunches, dinner,
takeaways and indoor/outdoor seating - it is known as a 'health food restaurant'. Although the concept of 'eco-friendly'
is not done well, with every item individually pre-packaged and multiple containers/cutlery issued, the location and
setting are nice and relaxed. The prices are reasonable and comparable with other cafes in this area ($550 pesos for
lunch for two which included 2 quiches/tarts, 2 deserts and 2 juices). The coffee is not good at all, so steer clear of that
and grab a yummy juice instead! I enjoy the vegetable quiches/tarts and the deserts are nice too. I have returned here
and will be doing so again. Worth a try if you are looking for something a bit different in Montevideo.

Have you been to El Gran Pez Restaurant in El Pinar?

I visited El Gran Pez Restaurant in El Pinar yesterday and it stood up to all the great things that I had been told about it.  The food was excellent, full of flavour and quite different to all the other restaurants we have tried in Uruguay - make sure to check out the specials too.  The sunny outdoor space at El Gran Pez is lovely and our kids enjoyed running around as well as playing on the small playground.  You need to make reservations at El Gran Pez, it is quite popular, and also note that it is cash only.  Check out El Gran Pez on Facebook.

Where can you get great pizza in Carrasco?

I have frequented Don Pepperone often and their pizza is ok but this week I went to Chivi Pizza and it is great!  Available for takeaway (delivery) and dine-in.  Chivi Pizza bases are a medium thickness and the variety of topping types is excellent.  The pizzas were yummy and the setting is really nice too (a bit chilly in winter but in summer it would be great to return and use the great outdoor seating area that they have).  Chivi Pizza also offer imported beers and a great selection of non-alcoholic drinks (I had a peach basil drink that was delicious).  And for an added bonus, Chivi Pizza in Carrasco is open from 7pm!   I will be returning here with my family for sure :)

What are some great restaurants in the Carrasco area?

I live in Carrasco and often get asked what restaurants are good in the area.  So this will be the first in a series of Carrasco restaurants reviews:

TizianoMurillo 6566 (corner with Arocena)I love this restaurant, in summer you can sit outside in a fully fenced garden area (so the kids can't escape!) and they even bought my children pens and colouring paper!  that is unusual for Uruguay.  In winter the inside is lovely and warm with great decor.  The service was great and the food was delicious, no complaints from me.  Tiziano offers the usual Uruguayan style food (BBQ, pizza, pasta) with a few added extras.  I will be returning to this restaurant for sure.

Where is there a great family-friendly and affordable restaurant?

Mendizabal is a favourite restaurant of mine in Montevideo.  It has a large amount of seating so you don't need to book, the service is excellent, it is family friendly, the menu is extensive, the food is delicious and I have never been disappointed, plus it is affordable (similar prices to La Pasiva but much better food!).  Mendizabal is my family's go-to restaurant on weekends :)

Where can you get a great steak in Montevideo?

This question has endless answers because there are multitude of restaurants serving great steaks.  I visited one of my favourite restaurants last night and thought I would tell you all about it.

La Diecisiete is located on the Rambla Costanera (heading east out of the city) where it meets Parada 17.  It is the only restaurant on that strip of the Rambla so easy to find (look for the big white sign with the black cow in the middle).  Parking is easy and I sometimes enjoy not having to head into the city to a busy area.  La Diecisiete is a family friendly restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating.  The baby beef (430 pesos) is amazing!  always cooked to perfection and delicious.  The salads are also good, as is the pasta, kids meals, provolone...the list goes on.  I go to this restaurant for lunch on weekends with the kids, for dinner in the evening without the kids, sit outside in the summer, sit inside in the winter and I have never had a bad experience.

You can find La Diecisiete on Facebook and on their website.

Where can you get crepes in Montevideo?

Crepas opened in Punta Del Este around 3 years ago and then last year opened in Punta Carretas.  I am pleased to say they are now open in Carrasco too.  I visited at a quiet time so ordering and receiving my crepe was quick but I have heard that if it is a busy time it can take up to 45minutes to get a crepe.  There is nice outdoor seating which is great when the weather is nice - I imagine that this place will be busy in summer, being so close to the beach.  There are no prices on any of the food or drink which I find odd, for your information the crepes are all 220 pesos.  I enjoyed my caramelised apple crepe, as did my kids and my friends (who also ordered savory flavours such as oriental chicken and ham/cheese).  Although the crepes were crispier than I would like (I like softer crepes like I have had in France, New Zealand, Brazil...) I would go back to try another flavour.

Check out Crepas on Facebook or on their website.

Where can you get a great coffee in Montevideo?

I am happy to say that you can finally get great coffee in Uruguay!  it is at La Madriguera Cafe in Carrasco (Cambara 1614, just next to Freddo).  Anyone that has travelled and drank coffee in Australia and New Zealand should know what great coffee is and you can see this at La Madriguera Cafe!  The food is good too (croissants, cakes, muffins, slices, biscuits, brownies), plus free wifi and a nice setting - what more could a girl ask for?  I will be a regular at this cafe for sure :)  And don't forget to pick up a coffee card, get it stamped each time you buy a coffee and your 10th is free.  Also, one tip...they do not take payment via card of any kind so take cash (and make sure it is small denomination because when I went they didn't have change for 1,000 pesos).

You can find La Madriguera Cafe on Facebook.

Where can you get a great homemade-style burger in Montevideo?

Other than all of the Uruguayan style bars/restaurants that sell chivotos and hamburgers that seem pretty similar to chivitos I was unable to find a great burger in Montevideo until I found Burlesque Bar.  They do burgers including salmon, chicken, pork, beef and more.  They are homemade and taste delicious, the chips are great too!  I have been here a number of times and will surely be going back.  I have also taken my kids there (they open at 7pm) and it is great for kids if you are there early when it is not too full.

Where can you get great Chinese food in Montevideo?

I would like to recommend a new Japanese/Chinese fusion restaurant in Montevideo called Fusimi. It is a buffet style (500 pesos per adult) with all kinds of Japanese sushi and a large selection of Chinese food. Delicious! I will be going back for sure. It is open for lunch and dinner (and on weekends too!).
